He had blown off a few agnozing rounds of “After the Ball”, when a glass full of water was thrown through the screen door striking him full in the face.

He merely “houched” a few inches to one side and after a long, discordant blast which was vivid reminder of Sells Bros’. menagerie, he bellowed forth the well known strains of “Boom De Aye”

ll of water was trickling down his neck, and without an instant’s cessation of the horrible shrieks he made another step to one side of the doorway and struck up a third antiquated tune.

Just as the merriment was at its height a bucket full of water made sloppy by washing soda glasses was thrown out of the doorway, entirely deluging the bagpiper and two Salvation Army women who happened to be coming up the street behind him.

The band was formed in late 1983 as an off shoot of the Fairfax County Firefighter’s Emerald Society which was originally organized in April of 1983. The goal was to emulate the FDNY Emerald Society, that of having a Pipe Band component to the social organization. Bill Schumm, President of the Emerald Society, and Ed Snyder, a member, met with John D. “Zim” Zimmerman to learn what was involved with starting a pipe band. “Zim” was, at the time, the Drum Major for the Washington Scottish Pipe Band A.K.A. The Saint Andrews Society Pipes and Drums. Zim believed in our cause and became the Drum Major for the new band. He also taught bass drumming, how to march, attack tunes and how to properly wear the uniform.

The Sons of Scotland, formed in 1896 by D.L. McLean, is Canada’s oldest civilian pipe band. James Anderson led the band in the early 1900s. The band played in Ottawa for the first time in 1896 in celebration of the death of Robert Burns. It was in fact the first pipe band to be heard in the nation’s capital. Unfortunately, little is known about the band’s early activities.
